Rise of the Nazis?

Thanks to L.W. for this one.
This post is in response to this Nunatsiaq news letter to the editor.
Every once in a while we see a very telling Letter to the Editor in Nunatsiaq News. A good example of this is a letter written by Lootie Apak Kooneeliusie and published in that paper just yesterday.

Apparently, someone shit in Lootie's Corn Flakes and he suspects it was one of us "white Nazis".

I’m glad that Nunatsiaq News chooses to publish these racist rants whenever one of them comes across the editor’s desk, which I suspect happens quite frequently. It’s a good reminder to all of us that racism is not the exclusive domain of any one group.

It’s interesting to speculate on the background of this idiot. Does he work for the GN? That wouldn’t surprise me! If he does work for the GN, will his supervisor come down hard on him the way some of us "visitors" have been kicked around. I doubt it!

I’d like to think an imbecile like this would never be hired by any responsible employer.  I wonder what type of man Lootie really is?  Considering that he likes to run his mouth, yet probably would never consider living off the generousity of the Canadian tax-payer that he so reviles.

Keep it up Lootie - you’re giving us all a good laugh!

Having lived for a couple years in Qikiqtarjuaq, I recognized this clown's name when I read the letter. I've been searching my memory but can't put a face to the name. Just another forgettable person in the end I suppose. Qik is a"decentralized" community (not much in the way of GN jobs there....or motivation to find employment either I might add) so I doubt this guy has to worry about upsetting a GN employer.

When I was in Prague I visited a synagogue with the names of hundreds of Prague Jews killed by the Nazis. I'm not sure how many names there were but there many walls with names from ceiling to floor. If only this ass was there, perhaps he would have gotten a bit of an education as to Nazism and intolerance.

The only good thing that I can say about Lootie and his letter is that he has enough "balls" to sign his real name. I can only assume that he does not work for the same employer that likes to oppress the thoughts of "others" in this territory and drive us underground.

Will Lootie be condemned by his community for making racist comments about "whites"? Will other members of Qikiqtarjuaq write their own letters to Nunatsiaq news distancing themselves from Lootie's opinions? Will the people of Qikiqtarjuak feel comfortable enough about condemning racism against "whites" that they will be willing to sign their real names to their letters?

I fear that Lootie's attitudes are more common-place than we might want to believe.

Yes, Larry. That's true - he did have "balls".

While the nazi comment is over the top the rest of the expressed sentiments are common I would think, not only in Nunavut but Nunatsiavut as well.
In some instances I think they are justified, it’s a pity that the venom can not be toned down and channeled in a pro active way and be pin pointed, it does no one any good to paint everybody with the same brush.

As to signing ones name to comments and letters, Inuit are not the only transgressors there, I think it has been picked up by the behaviors of the dominant society myself.

Last time I wanted to post on this, you did not allow anonymous comments. But now you do!

I did not like Lootie's letter to the editor in Nunatsiaq News. But if we replace "white nazis" with "lawyers", I would very much agree.

I think I speak for most Inuit when I say that Lootie is kind of a nut. I don't know him/her, but I think it's safe to say most Inuit were just as disgusted as you folks when we read that letter.

"I fear that Lootie's attitudes are more common-place than we might want to believe."

You can fear all you want Larry. And don't expect letters pouring in from other Inuit distancing themselves from Lootie's comments. That's not the way Inuit do things - he/she will be quietly ignored and pitied by other Inuit - most of whom will not feel a need to publicize their disappointment in Lootie for publicitys sake.

Too bad!

How will anyone know where Inuit stand, on an individual or collective basis, unless they state their position in a public forum, as Lootie did? He may be crazy, but at least he has conviction!

Like it or not, silence on the issue will be seen by the minority as support.

And, by the way, don't make assumptions about who you speak for!

Man, I've been sitting up on the roof of my house with all my guns for the past several weeks waiting for Lootie's big war to start and......nothing. Man! I cleaned my rifle and polished my jack-boots for nothing!

y birth name was Kooneeliusie; in my heart I will always share in my Grandfathers heritage of 'true' tolerance, patience and a merry heart.
The whole of my extended family live in Broughton-Qik. My Uncle Lootie is part of a collective who seems to have been plagued by numerous hardships during 'Nunavut's birth', it isn't the intention to excuse, it is just a fact. My generation and those of the up-and-coming are developing, and thankfully, being nurtured by many, many various people who share our lovely, cold home and they're sharing their solid lives is a positive to those around them... too, there are others who are sooo impatient, so willing to live with feathers ruffled all the time and yet as someone recently reminded me, "everyone has a different view of this world we all share and we can in some way enhance one another's life" - and even for the linguistically articulate, the cognitively blessed it can be difficult to be tolerant towards the intolerable.

I hope to be patiently constructive and tolerant with all.

we all make mistakes, we say something we wish we never said, it just happens, lootie kooneeliusie did say some things he wish he didn't, and i know because i'm his daughter, and i would never want to hear the things people wrote about my father, all of the people reading this now would maybe feel the same way i do if their father was talked about like mine was, when reading the blog and comments written below i felt hurt, the things my father wrote were mean and racist, but what people wrote bellow were even more, also the person who wrote this blog "apparently, someone shit in Lootie's corn flakes and he suspects it was one of us white nazis" wrote "Arctic Agent" Come on!!!! that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard in my life, i understand all of you are just sharing your comment, while, im sharing mine too

Let's just stop pretending shall we?

I'm in Qikiqtarjuaq right now and I have continually been shocked by the rude racist people in this community.

Even the children are racist.

I've been to many other Nunavut communities and I've always been treated well. I've been hugged, invited to dinner in family homes and taken out for adventures in the land.

Here, people are rude and obnoxious to me when I smile at them.

I have met at least fifty people and three were nice to me.

I can't wait to get out of here :(
